MONSTERVERSE HALLOWEEN

Monster movies are becoming popular yet again! Whether they’re over-the-top or profound, they provide audiences with escapism during uncertain real-world times while also helping people engage with heavy themes in a more approachable way.

Beneath the spectacle, these films carry powerful symbolism, using monsters to reflect issues such as war, fear of nuclear weaponry, humanity's hubris, and survivor’s guilt.

Through immersing myself in the genre, I became a fan, which helped me better understand the target audience and what makes these creatures titans, not only in their universe—but pop culture as a whole.

After conducting on-site trend research at a variety of apparel stores along with additional online research, I ultimately selected trends that focus on streetwear, horror, and comedy as primary themes. This creates a collection that balances classic and contemporary styles. I wanted the designs to be versatile enough to be worn year-round, rather than limited to the Halloween season.

This blanket riffs on the over-the-top look of ’90s kids’ toy ads, leaning into the era’s bright, playful colors. The cheerful palette and typography are deliberately set against the violent scene of two monsters fighting to the death, creating a fun twist of dark humor that gives the design its quirky personality.

This hoodie evokes a more alternative, streetwear vibe. I drew inspiration from tie-dye for the background, the cloud graphics echoing the swirling, splotchy aesthetic. The Godzilla artwork itself has a gritty, high-contrast black-and-white feel, achieved by manipulating the threshold and adding grain to give it more texture.

This graphic tee was inspired by vintage horror movie posters—the kind that use bold typography, dramatic lighting, and eye-catching visuals used to channel the old-school monster movie vibe.
